Preface to the Second Edition
The importance of permanent magnet motor technology and its impact on electromechanical drives has significantly increased since publication of the first edition of this book in 1996. The NdFeB permanent magnet (PM) prices have dropped and their performance has improved, brushless motor technology has become much more mature, in many applications commutator motors have been replaced by more reliable brushless motors, new PM motor topologies have found their first applications, and significant progress in control techniques and design computations has been achieved. Application of small PM brushless motors has increased on a large scale not only in computer hardware but also in consumer electronics, building equipment, defence force, airborne apparatus, instrumentation and automation systems. The era of electric and hybrid cars is close and it is obvious that PM brushless motors are the highest power density and efficiency traction motors. The all-electric ship, more electric azrcraft, advanced combat vehicle, smart buildings and other large-scale research programs also stimulate the development of PM motors. Since the 1996 book does not cover the most recent advances, the authors have prepared this revised, improved, and expanded second edition. We believe that the new edition will serve as both a textbook and design handbook for PM motors and will stimulate innovations in this field.

This book presents a new global optimization technique using Taguchias method and its applications in electromagnetics and antenna engineering. Compared with traditional optimization techniques, Taguchias optimization method is easy to implement and very efficient in reaching optimum solutions. Taguchias optimization method is developed based on the orthogonal array (OA) concept, which offers a systematic and efficient way to select design parameters. The book illustrates the basic implementation procedure of Taguchias optimization method and discusses various advanced techniques for performance improvement. In addition, the integration of Taguchias optimization method with commercial electromagnetics software is introduced in the book. The proposed optimization method is used in various linear antenna arrays, microstrip filters, and ultra-wideband antenna designs. Successful examples include linear antenna array with a null controlled pattern, linear antenna array with a sector beam, linear antenna array with reduced side lobe levels, microstrip band stop filter, microstrip band pass filter, coplanar waveguide band stop filter, coplanar ultra-wide band antenna, and ultra-wide band antenna with band notch feature. Satisfactory results obtained from the design process demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed Taguchias optimization method.
